We believe that a small group of psychologists creates an optimal setting for the provision of professional counselling services in private practice.
If you've never experienced counselling, it may be difficult to know what to expect. Sometimes, what is depicted in media is not an accurate reflection of the healthy collaborations that take place in our office. Modern, professional counselling is straight forward and friendly within a comfortable and confidential setting. While your psychologist is trained to gently guide the process, you are considered an equal partner in your journey of self development and wellness.
Counselling involves discussing your thoughts, feelings and bahaviors with a psychologist. Together you agree on goals that can best be met though gentle alterations in perspectives, actions and beliefs. Your psychologist is an expert in behavioral change and can make suggestions for you to practice new ways of interating with others and your environment between sessions.
Counselling is a natural, straight forward system of change that can be used to improve the general quality of your life, elevate & stabilize mood and treat relational & psychological disorders. It's a process of collaboration intended to improve your general well being.
All the psychologists in our office have extensive training and experience in cognitive-behavioral therapy, CBT. This type of counselling has been scientifically proven to be effective with a wide range of mental health issues and emotional & relational problems. In CBT, clients are asked to explore their thoughts through "self talk," logging and other clearly defined techniques so that they can discover how their beliefs, perceptions and actions are associated with various emotional states. Practice in engaging in healither behaviors and thoughts results in positive chages in how clients feel and interact with others.
In addition to the benchmark of our clinical practice, CBT, psychologists in our group received training and experience in a vast array of supplementary theories and techniques. This enables our clients to receive assistance to meet their unique needs. Among the types of counselling represented are hypnosis, motivational interviewing, parenting skills, crisis intervention, systems theory, prolonged exposure therapy and multiple approaches to couples therapy.
Assessment is a formal process that combines a clinical interview with the administration of written tests. Following a review of the information and data collected, reports are often generated and reviewed in person. Assessment is typically used to measure psychological constructs such as intelligence or depression and diagnose mental disorders.
Our office offers assessment of learning and attention disorders in adults and adolescents aged sixteen years or older. This type of assessment is often referred to as psychoeducational since students in college and university can use reports to assist their learning through recommended accommodaitons and individualized skill development.
Other uses of our assessment skills involve identifying attention regulation disorders and/or hyperactivity among adults. Many difficulties such as addictions, anxiety and relationship problems may be associated with an undiagnosed attention disorder. This type of assessment may help to demystify the cause of some adults' struggle to maintain regular employment or may help to explain why some people engage in impulsive behaviors when their intention is to avoid boredom.
Our psychologists have expertise in several areas of psychology. Due to our wealth of knowlege, individuals may choose to meet with us to receive advice or have us answer questions specific to our areas of experience. This often takes the form of offering an informed opinion on a specific topic. The most common form of consulting in our office is for parenting skills.
In medicine, when there are significant physical problems, often diseases are diagnosed. In some cases in psychology, when there are significant psychological problems, mental disorders are diagnosed. Psychologists in North America use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as the standard reference to define diagnoses. Each disorder has a set of criteria that psychologists are trained to use to provide diagnoses. Differential diagnosis is another important concept in the field since many disorders share common or similar criteria.
